May concerts to feature musical variety

PASADENA, Texas – San Jacinto College (SJC) will host music concerts during May that will feature student and faculty musicians. Unless otherwise noted, all events are free and open to the public.

North Campus concerts will be held at the Dr. Charles Grant Fine Arts Center, 5800 Uvalde in Houston. Central Campus concerts will be held at the Dr. Monte Blue Music Building, 8060 Spencer Hwy., in Pasadena.

• Tuesday, May 1, 7:30 p.m. – The North Campus will host a wind ensemble concert, under the direction of SJC music professor Dr. Randy Snyder. The concert will feature “Symphonic Overture” by Carter, “Prelude and Fugue in B-flat” by Bach, “Chorale and Shaker Dance” by Zdechlik, “Third Suite” by Jaeger, “Radetzky March” by Strauss, and “Bugler’s Holiday,” which will feature student musicians Richard Rodriguez, Rigo Hinojosa, and Addonis Edwards.

• Wednesday, May 2, 7 p.m. – The Central Campus orchestra, under the direction of Aaron Bielish, will present the final spring semester concert. The program includes works by Corelli, Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Mills. The featured work, Corelli's “Concerto in G minor, Opus 6, No. 8,” will feature student soloists Elizabeth Wheelis, Ashley Sloan, and Casey Gordon. Also featured is the premiere of a new work for orchestra by concertmaster Joe Mills titled “Southern Airs.”

• Wednesday, May 2, 7:30 p.m. – The North Campus will host a choral concert, under the direction of Moore. The concert will showcase the College’s choir and smaller vocal ensemble, which will perform classic works of choral literature by such noted composers as Hassler, Schubert, Luboff, and Bartok.

• Thursday, May 3, 7 p.m. – The Central Campus will present a choir concert featuring four choral ensembles, under the direction of Dr. Paul Busselberg, Central Campus director of choirs. The concert choir will perform Mozart’s “Sparrow Mass” that will feature several student soloists. The men’s and women’s choruses will present selections from the standard repertoire, as well as modern selections, including music by Eric Whitacre and Billy Joel. The college chorale will present a wide variety of selections, including a preview of a program they will perform at Clear Lake United Methodist Church on May 6. Music professor Dr. Sarah Spencer will accompany the program on piano.

• Sunday, May 6, 2:30 p.m. – The Pasadena Philharmonic Orchestra will present its final concert of the 2011-2012 season in the Slocomb Auditorium, located on the Central Campus. A featured soloist will be SJC sophomore music student Khoa Truong, winner of the Pasadena Area Music Teacher’s Association Piano Concerto competition. Truong will perform Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” Other selections by the orchestra will include “The Hebrides Overture” by Mendelssohn, and Antonin Dvorak’s “Symphnony No. 8 in G major.” The admission price for the concert is $10 a person for adults, and $8 for seniors and children. Tickets will be available at the door.

• Friday, May 18, 12 p.m. – The North Campus will present a piano recital by music professor Dr. Kingchi Au, who will perform contrasting styles to demonstrate her artistry, and the versatility of the piano to convey unique aesthetics.
