Lost Or Stolen Devices and Data

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for protecting your device & any data you printed or stored on the hard-drive. Laptops, tablets & smartphones are not just expensive - they are prone to theft & may also store documents containing sensitive information.

Immediately Report Loss or Theft

Contact TechSupport@sjcd.edu (281) 998-6137 AND Campus Police 281-476-9128 to report the loss or theft of any of the following:

  • Any College device such as laptops, smartphones & tablets.

  • Any personal device you use to access your College email & documents.

  • College Identification Cards

  • Keys

  • Printed reports that contain student, employee, or personal information. Forward a copy of any any lost or stolen printed reports to TechSupport@sjcd.edu

Change Your Password(s)

Change Your Password(s)

Protect Access to Your Device and Sensitive Data

  • Power off your laptop whenever it is not in use.
  • Do not carry the laptop in suspend or hibernation mode.
  • Never store passwords with your laptop or in its carrying case.
  • Other forms of user authentication should be kept separate from your laptop at all times.
  • When away from your desk, leave your laptop in locked / “log in required” protection status.
  • Password protect access to your smartphone & tablets.
  • Don’t print paper reports that contain sensitive data.

Protect Your Laptop and Sensitive Data From Theft

  • Keep your laptop close to you & in sight. Otherwise, keep it locked away securely. It only takes a moment for a thief to walk away with your laptop.
  • Never leave your laptop visible in your car, overnight or for long periods of time.
  • Do not download or store any documents or spreadsheets that contain sensitive information on your laptop’s hard drive that are not password protected or encrypted.
  • Do not store or carry printed reports that include sensitive information in any bag. This includes personal bags, work bags & laptop bags.
  • Travel without your laptop if it is not needed.
