San Jacinto softball honored with Region XIV awards
PASADENA, Texas — For the first time in the program's history, the San Jacinto College softball team is back-to-back conference and regional champions. The Coyotes clinched the regional title in a 3-1 victory over Bossier Parish Community College on Sunday, May 15, and is headed back to the NJCAA Softball World Series for the sixth time in program history.
Several Coyotes walked away from the regional tournament with individual recognition.
First-Team All-South Conference honors went to freshman P Christin Haygood (Huffman / Hargrave HS), who also earned the conference pitcher of the year award, sophomore C/IF Kaurie Winters (Deer Park / Deer Park HS), sophomore IF Maggie Childs (Santa Fe / Santa Fe HS), sophomore UT Tabby Burnett (Deer Park / Deer Park HS), sophomore OF Juliana Garcia (Santa Fe / Santa Fe HS), sophomore UT Maddy Bailey (Katy / Morton Ranch), sophomore OF Gabby Cantu (Baytown / Goose Creek HS), sophomore P/UT Ronni Grofman (Kingwood / Kingwood HS), and freshman UT Taniece Tyson (Lancaster / McNeese State).
First-Team All-Region honors included Haygood, Garcia, Bailey, Grofman, and Tyson. Second-Team All-Region recognition went to Childs, Burnett, and Cantu.
"I am so proud of these young ladies and all of their hard work," said San Jac Head Coach Kelly Saenz, who brought home Region XIV Co-Coach of the Year honors. "They played against some really great teams and continued to improve throughout the season. I have been honored to work with them and watch them grow as individual players and as a team."
San Jac went undefeated at the regional tournament to earn its sixth trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association Softball World Series May 25-28 at the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex in Yuma, Arizona.
